O.F.A.H. Response to EBR #010-7724 - deer scents
O.F.A.H. Response to E.B.R. Registry #010-7724
E.B.R. Registry #010-7724: Proposed regulation to prohibit possession and use, for the purpose of hunting, of products that contain or purport to contain, any body part of a member of the deer family that may contribute to the potential spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (C.W.D.), including urine, blood, glands or other fluids. [ E.B.R. Posting ]
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.), its 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 660 member clubs, are extremely concerned about the ongoing spread of chronic wasting disease (C.W.D.) continentally (now present in 15 U.S. states, as well as Alberta and Saskatchewan). Overwhelming evidence points to deer farming and the legal and illegal movement of captive deer as the primary source of C.W.D. spread within and across borders.
As such, the O.F.A.H. has consistently advocated for greater federal-provincial regulation and phasing out of the deer farming industry, and provincially for a seamless firewall to prevent the emergence of C.W.D. into Ontario (especially from its most likely source -- deer farms). Clearly, based on the experience of jurisdictions where C.W.D. has spread to wild deer, control is extremely expensive and largely ineffective; Ontario needs to redouble its efforts to address all significant possible sources of C.W.D. spread and emergence with the view of prevention.
