Ice Hut Registration Clarification

The 2008-2009 Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary came into effect on January 1, 2008. Contained in the new summary (page 11) is a regulation concerning mandatory registration of ice huts in certain zones. Confusion has arisen around the necessity of registering portable, day use only, huts under the new regulation that have not historically been the target of the registration. The O.F.A.H. has been in touch with the M.N.R. Fisheries Section on this issue and has received a response. Both letters are available below in PDF form.

In the O.F.A.H. letter to the M.N.R., we are proposing the following:

  • a communiqué be published by M.N.R. clarifying that portable huts are NOT the target of the regulation, both to the public and M.N.R. staff
  • that M.N.R. consult with anglers and the angling industry to create a definition that properly excludes portable huts from the registration process

The O.F.A.H. will be working with the M.N.R. Fisheries Section to develop a definition of portable huts that properly exempts them from registration in the near future.

Any updates on this issue will be posted here as soon as they become available.

O.F.A.H. reminds all anglers to be safe on the ice and remember to pack all garbage off the ice with them. Also, be sure to check regulation for ice hut removal dates. Note: permanent type huts need to be registered.
