OFAH calls for PAL extensions to address backlog
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) is calling on the federal government to address what it called an “ever-growing backlog” of Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) renewal applications by offering six-month extensions.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which runs the Canadian Firearms Program, states it is “currently experiencing significant impacts to our services, like many other service providers in Canada,” as a result of measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Clients may experience longer than normal wait times when calling, and the processing of applications for a new licence and production of licence cards may be delayed because of reduced capacity in the processing centre, the RCMP states on its website.
Temporary measures sought
“While we understand the delays have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have officially called on government to implement temporary measures that will allow for users who are currently caught up in the backlog the opportunity to continue to enjoy their hunting, trapping, and sport shooting activities,” the OFAH stated in a July 21 email to members.
“These activities are incredibly valuable as it relates to the well-being of many Canadians – and now, perhaps more than ever, they provide an much-needed escape from the daily challenges we face, both individually and as a society during these difficult times.”
