Rabies Vaccine

From July to October, ministry crews will be distributing vaccine baits by air and on the ground in southern Ontario.

In rural areas, MNRF staff will be flying in a yellow Twin Otter airplane or yellow EC130 Helicopter at low altitude (≈150 m above ground). Urban areas will be baited by ground crews.

A map of the planned oral rabies vaccine baiting areas and baiting schedule can be found online.
• Urban hand baiting will occur from July – October
• Raccoon Strain baiting by Twin Otter airplane is planned for August 20-31
• Raccoon Strain baiting by Helicopter is planned for August 13-17 and September 10-14
• Fox strain baiting by Helicopter is planned for September 17-21
The oral rabies vaccine baits are khaki green, coated with a vanilla sugar attractant. Raccoons, skunks and foxes that eat the baits become vaccinated against rabies. Exposure to the baits is not harmful to people or pets; however, if found, baits should not be touched, but left for raccoons, skunks and foxes to consume.

The oral rabies vaccine (ONRAB®) is an Ontario produced vaccine developed by MNRF and Artemis Technologies Inc., and is one of the most successful oral rabies vaccines in the world.
