Reminder about Fish Sanctuaries
It is important to remember that many of Ontario’s fish species are protected by areas in which no fishing of any kind is allowed. Fish sanctuaries are used:
• To increase fish populations
• To protect fish while they are spawning or protecting their young
• To protect a rare or endangered species
Fish sanctuaries can be closed all year or just for a particular period within successive years. Not all fish sanctuaries are marked with signs. You may review Exceptions to Fisheries Management Zone regulations in Ontario’s 2018 Fishing Regulations Summary or by using Fish ON-Line, an online fishing tool with maps and information on fishing specific to the areas in which you are angling! If you’re at all uncertain, check with your local Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office before you fish.
To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
