Winter 2016 Update from Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association

Dear CSIA/CNSF Members,
I trust that the start of 2016 has been has been good for you personally and for your organization. Thank you for taking a moment to review our News Flash.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held Thursday March 17th at the International Centre in Mississauga. Thanks to Walter Oster of the Canadian National Sportsmen’s Shows, you’re invited to join us in Lyra A Room in the Conference Centre of the International Centre at 8am for a complimentary hot breakfast followed by the AGM. We’ll have you on the show floor by 9am.
With the recently-elected Federal Liberal government we are already noticing an agenda shift that has the potential to negatively affect recreational fishing. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has given specific instructions to the Honourable Hunter Tootoo, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Canadian Coast Guard, to increase the proportion of Canada’s marine and coastal areas that are protected – to five percent by 2017, and ten percent by 2020. Given U.S. examples of Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s) being based not on solid science but rather on ‘other’ agendas, we are concerned the same will occur here in Canada.
Our Government Affairs Chair Phil Morlock will address this issue at the AGM. I strongly urge you attend on March 17th to receive this important update and, of course, to catch up with colleagues over breakfast.
I want to thank you for your continued support of the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association and the Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation through your annual membership. Our initiatives to promote and protect recreational fishing through National Fishing Week and Keep Canada Fishing are only possible because of your annual financial commitment.
Finally, join us for the annual Golf Fore Fish tournament June 1st at Glen Eagle Golf Club in Caledon, Ontario. A link to the registration form is included in this News Flash.
