Go Fish! Ontario Family Fishing Events run July 5-13

Canadian residents invited to try fishing during license-free days

Ontario Family Fishing Week gets underway this weekend, and clubs and service organizations across the province are getting ready to host family-friendly events. During the week of July 5 to 13, fishing derbies and festivals will be running in more than 50 communities, including several in the Toronto area. The popular initiative is designed to bring families together in the outdoors to enjoy fishing on one of Ontario’s more than 250,000 lakes and countless rivers and streams.

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) delivers Ontario Family Fishing Week as part of Ontario Family Fishing Events (OFFE), which is an Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) initiative. The OFAH and its partners are working hard to introduce more people to fishing.

“Fishing gives families the chance to reconnect without the distractions of everyday life getting in the way,” OFAH Executive Director Angelo Lombardo said. “We want to encourage everyone to go fishing during Ontario Family Fishing Week to experience a healthy outdoor activity that will provide them with a lifetime of memories.”

During Ontario Family Fishing Events, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years who would normally be required to purchase a fishing license, can fish Ontario waters license-free. Conservation license limits apply, as do all other provincial fishing regulations (available at www.ontario.ca/fishing).

Ontario Family Fishing Events is an initiative of the MNRF, organized by the Ontario Family Fishing Weekend Steering Committee. This committee is comprised of the OFAH, MNRF, Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association, Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Ontario Family Fishing Events also runs in conjunction with National Fishing Week. For more information visit www.catchfishing.com.

With more than 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 710 member clubs, the OFAH is the province’s largest nonprofit, fish and wildlife conservation-based organization and the VOICE of anglers and hunters.
