PETERBOROUGH — The Larry Wallace Memorial Volunteer Award is given to recognize those who work to ensure the future of conservation by sharing their knowledge and love of the great outdoors with the youth of today.
The 2015 winner of the award was Dave Winfield. What impressed judges the most about Winfield was the vast number of letters of support that were a part of his nomination from youth he has mentored in the outdoors.
One letter stated, “Over the years, Dave has allowed me to understand the meaning of conservation. He has given many youth the opportunity to experience the excitement of hunting. He knows that through activity, youth will gain an appreciation for wildlife and the habitat that surrounds it.”
Another letter read: “He comes out to many Get Outdoors events each year so that he can share his passion for the outdoors. And he doesn’t only come out to these events, he also welcomes youth to his property to share his knowledge and love for the outdoors with them.”
Recommendations aside, Winfield’s participation speaks for itself. He has participated in the annual camp out on his property for the Georgian Bay Get Outdoors Club, has given practical treestand safety tips to all the kids, planted 5,000 trees on his property, led the shotgun event at the annual North Simcoe Youth EXPO, received the basic level archery instructor certification and holds an apprentice day during the first day of the late season controlled deer hunt.
