City of Hamilton – Discharge of Firearms Bylaw Review

Notice – Upcoming Public Meetings & Consultations
City of Hamilton – Discharge of Firearms Bylaw Review

As you may be aware, the City of Hamilton is conducting a comprehensive review of the Discharge of Firearms Bylaw.  The dates and locations for the open public consultation are confirmed; the information will be posted on the public meeting page of the City website.

This review will:

  • Update the Schedule Map(s) where the discharge of firearms is prohibited to incorporate recent and future urban development for consultation with the affected land owners and stakeholders.
  • Provide clear interpretation and understanding of its provisions, reinforce federal/provincial firearm regulations, maintain public safety, and acknowledge/recognize the different aspects of bows vs. common firearms to balance the varied needs of the community.

Consultation maps have been prepared identifying the proposed boundary expansion areas for discussion with the affected landowners and stakeholders.  In reviewing these boundary changes, city staff will also receive and acknowledge any additional concerns or comments the public may have with the current bylaw to determine if its provisions continue to meet its general intent and purpose.

The city is at a very preliminary stage.  Any proposed changes to the bylaw, including redrafts of the maps, will not move forward until proper consultation with the public, firearm-related associations and businesses, and other regulatory bodies take place in an organized process.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Robert Ustrzycki, senior project manager, Municipal Law Enforcement Section at 905-546-2424 X4721, or e-mail: Robert.Ustrzycki@hamilton.ca.
