Rate of Pay: $26.86 per hour + 4% vacation pay

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) is currently searching for a hard-working, motivated individual to assist with our Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program (LOASRP). The Atlantic Salmon Habitat Technician will promote and support the LOASRP program by coordinating the habitat restoration and water quality enhancement component of the program; planning, coordinating, and delivering habitat projects on target tributaries; and delivering educational events related to the program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with municipal, provincial and federal government staff to coordinate funding proposals to expand habitat restoration project initiatives;
  • Conduct background research, review literature and technical studies to ensure leading edge techniques and state of the art practices related to restoration are applied;
  • Participate in meetings with other professional staff to plan short and long-range, strategic habitat restoration initiatives using a holistic, watershed-based approach;
  • Assist the program’s habitat partners with project management including project development and design, public consultations, permit acquisition, work plan development, budget preparation, cost control and close out;
  • Implement projects and conduct post-project assessment and reporting;
  • Prepare and coordinate proposals for partnership agreements and non-traditional sources of funding to assist in achieving mutual objectives;
  • Maintain effective liaisons with other agencies, community groups and the general public; and
  • Develop and deliver education presentations related to stream habitat restoration.

Education and Qualifications:

  • College or university education in environmental science, biology, fisheries, ecology or equivalent work-related experience in the relevant fields; and
  • Minimum of three years of education and/or experience in:
    • The development and management of environmental projects related to fish and wildlife habitat restoration and/or monitoring; and
    • Reforestation, naturalization and aquatic/wetland restoration experience.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of terrestrial and aquatic ecology;
  • Strong technical and general written and oral communication;
  • Experience with data base management skills (MS Office, GPS & GIS technology);
  • Budget management and funding/grant application experience;
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision;
  • Experience supervising staff and large groups of volunteers;
  • Experience operating an ATV, chainsaw, tractor/backhoe/skid-steer loader, T-bar post pounder, hand tools and/or heavy equipment would be an asset; and
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel long distances.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license (Class G), passport, fishing license, pleasure craft operator card, chainsaw certification, standard first aid with level A CPR & AED certification (as a minimum), criminal record check, and OFAH membership.
