The 2025 Commissioner of Firearms Report contained both good and bad news for firearms owners.
The good news is the number of firearms owners in the country continued its upward trend from recent years. In 2025, there were 2,473,661 firearms owners in Canada, an increase of more than 48,000 from 2024. This equates to about 6% of the country’s population.
Breaking down the number of firearms owners further, the number of non-restricted gun owners increased to 1,626,754. There was also an increase in the number of minor permits, to nearly 15,000. There was a decrease, however, in the number of restricted and prohibited license holders.
The bad news is the number of licensed firearms dealers took a significant hit, decreasing from 4,033 in 2024 to 3,766 — nearly a 10% drop.
