The Trent-Severn Waterway navigation system opened on schedule on May 15 for the Victoria Day long weekend, although some locks on the west end of the 42-lift route have yet to open.
Locks 42 through 45, including Couchiching, Swift Rapids, Big Chute Marine Railway, and Port Severn, are included in the staged opening which aims to protect boater safety and help further shoreline erosion and property damage, officials stated.
The 386-kilometre route linking Lake Ontario’s Bay of Quinte and Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay first opened in 1922. It’s managed by Parks Canada and is designated a National Historic Site.
From May 15 to June 18, lockstations will be open 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday to Sunday (and Victoria Day, May 22).
From June 19 to Sept. 7, lockstations will be open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday to Sunday (and Canada Day, July 1, Civic holiday Aug. 4, and Labour Day, Sept. 1).
From Sept. 8 to Oct. 12, lockstations will be open 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, including Thanksgiving on Oct. 13
Station opening and closing times, as well as first and last lockage, are not guaranteed and may be affected by water management duties, maintenance activities, or other types of navigation interruptions, officials stated.
