Ask a CO: On keeping roadkill

A reader asks if keeping roadkill requires a hunting licence. MNR Provincial Enforcement Specialist David Critchlow responds.

Q: Im a long-haul trucker. If I have an Ontario moose tag, can I keep roadkill?

Kyle Fabian, Pickering

A: Keeping roadkill does not require a hunting licence. If you take possession of the road-killed carcass of a black bear, caribou (see exception below), deer, elk, moose, protected raptor or furbearing mammal, you must submit a notice of possession through the ministry’s online registry, which can be accessed at: www.ontario.ca/page/keep-dead-wild-animal

Hunting tags should never be used for roadkill. Woodland caribou (boreal populations) are given additional protection under the Endangered Species Act, 2007; road kills of these may not be kept.
