What it is

Cellular signal boosters for vehicles.

The test

I have used many of these devices over the years with varying degrees of success. They generally only work on the fringe of cell reception, as they amplify an existing signal. Areas where you bounce in and out of service, or occasionally pick up one bar in a few select spots, are perfect spots to try a booster.

I permanently installed the My WeBoost Drive X in my truck. It consists of a mini antenna on the roof (attached by magnet or adhesive disk), wired to an amplifier box inside the vehicle, which is wired to a small antenna, also mounted somewhere inside your car or truck.

The wire from the roof antenna to your amplifier will run along the outside, going in through your door. The unit is powered by my truck's 12V DC plug.

While this booster can be made portable with the right 12V power supply, having three components plus all the routing wire means it's best kept in your vehicle.

What we think

Normally, there is no signal at our cabin without a booster. I may get one bar on a good day if I stand on one leg on the end of the dock. The Drive X in gets us a solid signal as long as we stay within a few feet of the truck.

My previous signal booster used a small cradle to hold a specific phone that was boosted, which worked, but isn’t as convenient as this model, which broadcasts the signal throughout a vehicle.

The Drive X keeps me connected on drives as I pass through areas of spotty reception. With it on, I don’t drop calls, and have consistent signal. It is handy on a daily basis and has been worth the price.

Although there are more affordable options, the WeBoost Drive X is well worth the expense.
