Once-stalled measures to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes are progressing.
Plans to build enhanced measures at the Brandon Road lock, such as acoustic, bubble, and enhanced electric barriers, were put on hold after Illinois delayed the purchase of 50 acres of land for the project. Things changed, however, when the state purchased the land in May and the US federal government announced funding for the project.
Called the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, the first step was the awarding of a contract last November for site preparation work. The total cost of the project is an estimated $1.15 billion.
