Calling all elk lovers

The Elk Technical Advisory Committee (ETAC), a group of elk experts, biologists, and academics, focused on the sustainability of elk populations in Ontario, is inviting volunteers to apply for membership. Managed by the MNR, ETAC’s primary focus is to support sustainable elk populations and their ecosystems, for the continuous provision of ecological, cultural, economic, and social benefits to Ontarians. OOD contributor, retired biologist, and ETAC Chair, Bruce Ranta says the group is a high-level think tank looking for new ideas. ETAC estimates the current population of elk in Ontario is below 1,000 and “despite the best efforts, minds, and access to technology, we are lucky to see half that number.” ETAC’s, and its self-described “elkoholics,” hold Zoom meetings three to four times a year. Members need not have specific qualifications, and participation can vary based on interest. Contribution can be through involvement in meetings, funding efforts, or by donating and deploying trail cameras.
