Ask an expert: Savage lever actions

Classic gear contributor Ken Doherty responds to a readers inquiry about doing an article on Savage lever actions.

Q: My interest was piqued by the three rifles in “Taking stock,” in the August 2023 issue. The centre rifle looks identical to my Savage .300 lever action. I recently bought it and was told that it shoots like a .308. Would you consider doing an article on Savage lever actions?

Calvin Albrech

Classic gear contributor Ken Doherty responds: I’m impressed that you could identify my Savage 99 from that photo. Mine is an EG Model in .300 Savage made in 1951. Based on your serial number, yours was made in 1946. The history of the Savage 99 and the .300 Savage cartridge are outlined in “Savage Model 1899/99,” on pg. 24 of the Spring 2024 issue.
