Attention hunters! You can earn a crest by helping us protect deer populations from chronic wasting disease (CWD). This fatal brain disease, not yet found in Ontario (but present in several nearby US states) affects white-tailed deer, elk and mule deer.
We are continuing our program to look for CWD in deer, with this year’s survey area being wildlife management units 36, 37, 43A, 43B, 44, and 45 (Manitoulin Island and the north shore of Lake Huron). With the help of Ontario’s hunters, this program will provide early detection if CWD enters Ontario.
During the firearms hunt, our technicians will canvas the survey areas and visit local hunt camps to ask if we may remove a small tissue sample from each deer head. Each hunter who provides a tissue sample from a deer taken in the surveillance area will receive a participation crest.
