Dan Thomey, founder of Ontario OUT of DOORS magazine, passed away in Cobourg on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017. Born in 1940, Thomey founded the tabloid Ontario Fisherman and Hunter in 1967, which eventually evolved into OOD.
Thomey was a major force for good in Ontario’s outdoors community. He fought for hunters’ and sport shooters’ rights and promoted fishing throughout the province, notably in the pages of OOD. He also launched the Great Salmon Hunt fishing tournament.
He sold the magazine in 1977 and moved to a farm on the banks of the Ganaraska River where he lived until his passing.
Thomey is survived by his wife, Jean, and daughter, Laura.
