DIY: Bringing lures back to life

If you’re like most anglers your tackle box is filled with zombies, but sprucing up these lures is pretty straightforward. Here’s how.

If you’re like most anglers your tackle box is filled with zombies — those scratched, rusted, and worn crankbaits and spoons that were once top producers, but are now rarely chosen over newer, shinier options. These baits are often marred with remnants of soft-plastic baits and staining from oxidation of hooks. Chemical reactions are also part of the equation, as water easily sneaks its way into our tackle boxes, wreaking havoc on the finish and hardware.

I have discovered that an eraser sponge, such as Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (available in grocery and hardware stores), is a great tool for bringing new life to most lures in dire need of some tender love and care. Sprucing up these lures is straightforward: simply remove hooks and split rings, wet the eraser sponge, and in a circular motion start polishing the lure. Periodically rinse the lure off and monitor the cleaning progress. The foam works like ultra-fine sandpaper, and brings your old favourites back from the dead.
