Migratory bird updates a mix of good and bad
OFAH Comments on Proposals to Amend the Canadian Migratory Birds Regulations
The OFAH Membership expressed general support for many of the proposed changes to the Migratory Bird Regulations, with one major caveat. The OFAH is not supportive of ECCC’s intent to eliminate physical migratory bird permits and regulations summaries completely and has suggested an alternate direction. We have also encouraged ECCC to consider expanding the proposed Sandhill Crane hunt.
While recognizing the need for a conservative approach during the creation of any new season, the OFAH recommends that, when feasible, ECCC and CWS consider expanding the hunt’s geographic reach in the future. Given that the highest estimated harvest rate of the proposed season (1,343 cranes between Ontario and Quebec) is projected only to slow, not stop Sandhill crane population growth, geographic expansion appears unlikely to pose sustainability concerns.
