The OFAH and the Community Hatchery Program (CHP) were selected by the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) as this year’s recipient for the Doug Clarke Memorial Award.
This award is presented to a CWF affiliate for the most outstanding conservation project completed during the previous year by the affiliate, its clubs, or its members.
“We thank the CWF for recognizing the hard work community hatchery volunteers contribute to fisheries and conservation in Ontario,” said Angelo Lombardo, OFAH Executive Director. “This Doug Clarke Memorial Award also speaks to the long-standing partnership of OFAH and MNRF to bring resources to these hatcheries through the Community Hatchery Program. The hatcheries and the volunteers are the true winners of this award.”
In 2019, 1,085 volunteers from the CHP-supported facilities donated 93,620 volunteer hours to raise and stock 7,956,598 fish into public waters in Ontario. The CHP also facilitates the transfer of knowledge and technical expertise in and among community hatcheries, assists with addressing government requirements, and provides support for fish health testing, proper egg collection, rearing and stocking procedures. These stocking activities complement the MNRF’s provincial fish culture system in enhancing angling opportunities and species rehabilitation efforts.
