OFAH Foundation has expressed significant concern about several aspects of provincial Bill 5, including changes to the Mining Act, the establishment of Special Economic Zones, and the elimination of the Endangered Species Act.
In partnership with Feed Ontario, the province’s largest collective of hunger-relief organizations, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is calling on the provincial government to follow the example of other Canadian jurisdictions and permit the donation of legally harvested wild game to Ontario food banks.
The OFAH supported proposed changes to simplify and align Ontario’s white-tailed deer hunting seasons in 2022 but stressed the need for comprehensive consultation.
The OFAH wrote to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in April 2021 opposing the repeal of Section 76 of the Health of Animals Regulations, which governs cervid movement permits.
The points-based tag system is still relatively new, and challenges remain to make it a streamlined process that is fair and works for everyone.
Boone & Crockett Club invited the OFAH to write an article about Ontario’s spring bear hunt. The article covered the history of bear hunting in Ontario, the cancellation of the spring bear hunt and the ensuing lawsuit by the OFAH, and the pilot spring bear hunt proposed by the Ontario government in 2014.
In 2020, the OFAH wrote to the MNR clarifying information around the orphaning of cubs and emphasizing that regulations are in place to protect cubs and females with cubs.
In 2013, the OFAH wrote to the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) asking them to consider expanding black bear hunting opportunities into additional Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) in southern Ontario.
