OFAH Letter to Public Safety Minister – June 2025
OFAH Reiterates Position on Firearms Policy
OFAH Membership has reached out to the new Minister of Public Safety Hon. Gary Anandasangaree to reiterate our call for evidence-based firearms policy in Canada. The letter highlights the value of hunting and shooting in Canada, our concerns about model-based prohibitions, and the estimated cost of the buyback program. We call on Minister Anandasangaree to reverse prohibitions and redirect the funding allocated for the buyback program to initiatives to have demonstrable improvements to public safety.
Canada’s future is steeped in economic turmoil. The most fiscally prudent approach is to cancel the firearms compensation program and divert those resources to areas where we can make a tangible difference to public safety. This would necessitate reversing gun bans imposed since May 2020, but would free up significant resources for proven initiatives that address the root causes of gun violence.
