Hunting Can Alleviate Food Insecurity
OFAH Calls on Government to Permit the Donation of Wild Game to Food Banks
In partnership with Feed Ontario, the province’s largest collective of hunger-relief organizations, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is calling on the provincial government to follow the example of other Canadian jurisdictions and permit the donation of legally harvested wild game to Ontario food banks.
Food insecurity is a growing concern across Ontario and, as it grows, the need for new sources of protein at food banks intensifies. Since conventional sources of protein are expensive and rarely part of the typical donation regime, members of the hunting community are uniquely positioned to help with this issue. Wild game meat is healthy, sustainable, and culturally significant for indigenous communities in particular, and the OFAH believes that donations of this kind should be allowed in Ontario.
