Potentially serious flaw in the design of moose aerial inventories Identified

OFAH Calls on Government to Address Flaws in Moose Aerial Inventory Process

The OFAH has identified a potentially serious flaw in the design of moose aerial inventories that can arise naturally in small wildlife management units. This letter to the Minister of Natural Resources outlines the issue in detail and provides actionable solutions.

Without a mechanism to account for the landscape heterogeneity identified here, Ontario risks making management decisions based on flawed methods rather than biological reality. Overestimates risk creating a sustainability concern, while underestimates needlessly reduce hunting opportunities and the tremendous social and economic contribution of Ontario’s moose hunting heritage. We urge the ministry to consider these common-sense refinements prior to the 2026 MAI season.
